2020-11-15
According to an official announcement by the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO), amendments to the Design Patent Examination Guidelines entered into force on 1 November 2020. The amendments have been implemented in light of recent development on digital economy and emerging technology. )

Gladly speaking, the amendments are perceived to give great benefits to the applicants, specifically:
  1. Removing restriction where computer-generated icon (CGI) and graphical user interface (GUI) design must be applied on a physical article (ex. GUIs on smartphone) to be eligible for design patent protection
  2. Indicating construction and interior designs as subject matters of design patent protection
  3. Relaxing requirements related to disclosure of descriptions and drawings
An explanatory document containing all recent amendments can be found here(Chinese only).
